ENES Kanter wrote “Erdogan sucks” on his shirt after allowing the NBA to change his last name
Boston Celtics center ENES Kanter posted a photo from his first press conference at the Celtics, using a graphic editor to replace the name on the Jersey with ” Erdogan sucks.”
In 2018, Mehmet Kanter, ENES’s father, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Turkey, but was recently released. ENES linked the arrest to the fact that Mehmet Kanter allowed himself to criticize the state and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Recall that Kanter himself stated that he was being hunted by the Turkish special services. At home, he is deprived of citizenship and will soon receive a us passport.
Previously, the NBA and the Union allowed players to replace the name on their jerseys with a statement about racial and social justice. The English Premier soccer League was one of the first professional sports leagues to adopt this method. The players replaced their names on their t-shirts with a statement from Black Lives Matter in support of the fight against global systemic racism. The NBA decided to follow the example of the APL.
