Every sport has its own way of commemorating its achievements. In most cases, there is a trophy which depicts the team win. Then, there are the personal items which are awarded to the athletes, so that they can have for many years to come a lasting memory of their achievements. Something that they can pass onto their children if they choose to. An excellent example of this is the NBA Championship rings.
An Impressive Piece of Jewellery
The latest to hit the news on this topic is the impressive championship rings which are being awarded to the Toronto Raptors for their stunning win. The ring holds 640 diamonds, but even they don’t outshine the glow of both the players and their fans on the victory of their latest NBA title.
The tradition of handing out rings in the sports world dates back to 1893 when players rings were given out in hockey. Now, it has become a tradition with the MLB and NFL, and as can be seen, with the NBA.
The first rings which were given out were not nearly as impressive as those of today. They were comprised of no more than a band of gold with a design engraved into them.
Each year following, the rings got bigger and better. They became more elaborate in design, with added precious stones. It seems like the goal has become to beat the predecessors’ rings. These rings have become so expensive, that some say the cost for one is equal to a down payment on a house.
Has It Gotten Out of Hand?
Some may think that with the salaries which the players receive, that the cost of the rings is just a little extravagant. This really comes down to personal opinion, and if the league can afford it, then why not?
